Multi-Use Path

The Village boasts over eight miles of bike and pedestrian trails winding throughout the neighborhoods. These multi-use paths are meant to be enjoyed by walkers, bicyclists, joggers, and the like. The Village would like to provide the following safety and courtesy rules when utilizing the paths.

E-Bike Laws in Illinois

llinois Regulations & Practical Safety Guidelines E-Bike Laws in Illinois - Classification System.

  • Ilinois uses a three-class system: Class 1: Pedal-assist only, cuts motor at 20 mph; Class 2: Throttle or pedal assist, max motor speed 20 mph; and Class 3: Pedal-assist only, up to 28 mph.
  • Labeling Requirements: All e-bikes must display a permanent label with class, top assisted speed, and motor wattage.
  • Age Restrictions: Riders must be 16 or older for Class 3 e-bikes. Younger individuals may ride as passengers if the bike is designed accordingly. No strict age limit for Classes 1 and 2.
  • Where You Can Ride: All e-bike classes are allowed on streets, roads, and bike lanes where bicycles are permitted. Class 1 and 2 are generally allowed on bike paths, unless restricted locally. Class 3 may be prohibited from bike paths—depending on local rules. Sidewalk riding is illegal statewide unless signage explicitly permits it.
  • Equipment Requirements:  For night use, a white front light (visible 500 ft) and red rear reflector or light (100–600 ft) are required. A bell or horn, audible for safety, is recommended. Brakes must disengage the motor—when brakes are applied (Class 2), or when pedaling stops (Classes 1 & 3).
  • Licensing, Registration, Insurance: No special license or registration is needed. No insurance is required by law, although optional coverage (e.g., via homeowner’s policy) is advised.

Pingree Grove Shared Use Path Extension Project

During the later part of 2024, the Village applied to the Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT) for a grant from the Illinois Transportation Enhancement Program (ITEP) in the amount of $2,510,672.23, to assist with costs to construct a Pingree Grove Shared Use Path Extension project. The program requires a 20% local match for engineering and construction. In June 2025, the Village was notified that out of 238 grant applications received, it was selected for one of the 67 projects awarded during the 2024 ITEP funding cycle. The $2,259,612 funding award will allow the Village to construct a shared use path extension along IL-72 and portions of US20, from Reinking Road on the east to Thurnau Road on the west. This path extension will support alternate modes of transportation while enhancing the Village's existing 8-mile path transportation system throughout the community.Pages from 2024-09-16 Pingree Grove - 24-00003-00-BT - Public Mtg Exhibits (23-1499)
