WE NEED YOUR HELP! (Skate Park Damage)

The Village prides itself on maintaining safe and high quality park and recreational amenities throughout our neighborhoods, and our staff work on a daily basis to keep our parks in excellent condition. The care that we exhibit reflects on the image of our community, but more importantly, it keeps our playgrounds safe for all to use. Our Public Works Director recently attended training to become a Certified Playground Safety Inspector, and during that training, it was emphasized that even minor defects in playground equipment can pose significant safety issues.

Last year, unknown vandals significantly damaged a slide near the Village's Skate Park. Because the slides are used in public recreation facilities, there are significant safety regulations that apply to their design and installation. With the damage to the slide, the Village was forced to order a new replacement slide. Unfortunately, this replacement slide came at a cost of $5,500. The Village budgeted for and incurred this expense, and installation of the new slide began last week. The slide installation was started, and our Public Works crews installed safety barricades around the slide at the close of their day, so that it would remain out of use until the concrete base could be poured the following day. Unfortunately, vandals caused irreparable damage to the slide during that one overnight period, and this new, $5,500 slide was destroyed in less than a day.

The Village works very diligently to be conservative with our public funds and financial resources, and we simply cannot justify spending $11,000 in replacing this same slide in one year. We need your help in identifying the persons responsible for this damage, and in keeping our recreation facilities safe and available for all.

If you have information on this damage, please call our Police Department non-emergency number at 847-464-4600. Anonymous tips are permitted. If you witness an act of vandalism in process, please call 911 and report it promptly. Together, we can keep our Village a safe and fun place for all!
